“I think the perfect hair care routine doesn’t need to be complicated,” says Julia North, Celebrity Hairstylist and Founder of Wigonia. Start with the very basics: wash 2-3 times weekly using a sulfate-free shampoo.
But this is a general rule, as “hair washing frequency depends on your hair texture and lifestyle. Those with fine or very oily hair will need to wash every 1-2 days, while those with thick or curly hair can go 2-7 days between washes,” she explains.
Washing too frequently strips the hair of its natural oils, which causes it to produce even more, so the more you wash your hair, the more you’ll need to. If you’re currently washing daily, North recommends weaning off the washing by gradually extending the time between washes to rebalance your sebum glands (the oil makers). This should happen between 2-4 weeks. Hang in there, it’s worth it in the long run.
